Description
Accompanying a broad collection of locomotives and rolling stock is a 25 mile stretch of the South West main line between Woking and Basingstoke. An exceptionally busy piece of track carrying trains from London Waterloo to Southampton Bournemouth Weymouth and the west of England. Southern Region is a pedigree title from the makers of Severn Valley Railway and in this we hail back to the 1960's. There are 4 tracks running throughout: Down Slow Down Fast Up Slow and Up Fast. As you would expect the slow lines carry freight and stopping trains and the fast are used for the express trains although not exclusively. "Down" refers to trains heading away from London and 'up' refers to those heading towards that capital. Beginning just east of Woking the route takes in the following stations on it route to Basingstoke following the South West line: Brookwood - rather morbidly this station was distinguished by having its own branch line serving the London Necropolis - a green field cemetery used to relieve the pressure on Londons' graveyards. Pirbirght - this is where the Alton line branches off Deepcut - so named because of the canal that lies just north but out of sight of the line. Infamous military bases are also found here Cross the Ascot to Ash and Reading to Guildford lines and then make a sweeping curve into Farnborough - main station 33 1/4 miles from London then on to Fleet Winchfield and Hook before finally arriving at the destination.
