In August of 1964 an American surveillance vessel got attacked in what became known as the Tonkin Gulf incident. From that moment the United States became involved in the war with North Vietnam. During the air war with North Vietnam the United States conducted three seperate air operations: Rolling Thunder Linebacker and Linebacker II. The Rolling Thunder campaign lasted from 1965 to 1968 and was the longest of the air operations. Operation Linebacker took place in spring of 1972 with Linebacker II taking place in December of 1972. Wings Over Vietnam recreates the intense air combat experience in the skies over North Vietnam at the height of the air campaign during the Vietnam War.
